Unfortunately for the pupils the Spring fish still haven't made an appearance but the crabs are still happy to take the bait!

Forest Schools - Year 7

Every Tuesday Year 7 all get the chance to learn outside the classroom for the whole morning at Forest Schools.

What is Forest Schools?

Forest School is an inspirational process, that offers ALL learners to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.

At Forest School all participants are viewed as:

• equal, unique and valuable
• competent to explore & discover
• entitled to experience appropriate risk and challenge

Here are a few of our favourite moments captured this week!

 

Year 7 make their very own Medieval Medicine

Year 7 have been learning to investigate who healed the sick in the Middle Ages.

Last lesson we learnt about the Barber Surgeon. Who did more than cut hair!

This week we watched a clip from ‘Horrible Jobs’ and how the Medicine Woman helped the sick.

We decided we wanted to re-create some of the cures made by the Medicine Women so had to start by going on a worm hunt!

 

A worm necklace was thought to help heal a sore throat. Some boys were brave enough to try this out!

 

Then we went on to make our very own medicine just like the Medicine Women and  compared ingredients to modern day throat sweets! The class decided honey was ok but worms were a step too far!

 

Montgenevre Ski Trip 2016 Part 2

After 4 days of non stop skiing the boys are starting to fly down the slopes. Today we have tackled a variety of runs including a red run called Les Sources. Here are a few action shots from the slopes.

The group are going to ski into Italy tomorrow, to the resort of Claviere. This will give them a final chance to impress Claude before she hands out the end of week skiing awards.

Exploring how Sedimentary rocks are formed.

Despite the rain, two pupils from 9CM managed to study the effects of water flow on the deposition of rocks, pebbles and sediment.


The particles that are deposited depending on the flow of water.



The larger particles are dropped fairly quickly.

Friday Fishing!

Again, The Polygon Fishermen braved the cold and the rain in the hope of catching a fish!

The boys fished Southampton waters for an hour and a half but the fish were not biting.

 

 

 

Frank was the first to reel in a catch but unfortunately a sneaky crab had eaten his bait and was holding on to his line.

 

 

Bradley caught the fish of the day, a Goby worth 20 points! Well done Bradley!   

Montgenevre Ski Trip 2016 Part 1

Early on Saturday morning 7 pupils and 3 staff set off for The Polygon School's annual ski trip. This year we have returned to Montgenevre in the French Alps. It is a small resort on the the Italian border, but has access to over 100km of skiing! Recently there has been a lack of snow in the area, however over 1 metre of snow fell  on the day before we arrived. Since then it has been blue skies making perfect skiing conditions.

The boys started anxiously however they were able to move quickly on from the nursery slope on Sunday afternoon, thanks to our ski instructor Claude. They are now getting stuck into green and blue runs. Claude and the staff have been very impressed with their progress and their bravery.

As we are now at the half way through the skiing the boys will keep moving up the mountain to longer and more demanding slopes.

A message from the Head Boy

 

We are very proud of our two Head boys at the Polygon School. They set a great example for younger pupils and can always be relied upon to represent the school.

 

 

"I am very proud to be Head Boy of the Polygon School, and be representing the school as I do. I aim to lead by example in both my behaviour and attitude to work. I always try to help other pupils resolve disagreements and personal issues. I support the staff and what they do and I am available to pupils if they need me".

It was great to see so many boys in the 3 Breakfast Club's this morning.

 

Fantastic start to the day! 

 

 

Teamwork - Improving our school community

Year 7 have been working hard this morning with the school Caretaker to help maintain the school grounds.

A cold start did not stop the year 7's picking up their brushes and buckets and scrubbing and cleaning the bike shed.

Mrs Hendon - John was so impressed with the pupils they have been rewarded with extra Vivo points!

Well done to all year 7 who took part, a great attitude was shown by all!

New SEAL room!

It's been great to watch the new SEAL room take shape over the last half term.

 

The work pupils are producing in SEAL lessons is fantastic and the bright, colourful engaging displays make the working environment perfect for our pupils.

 

Well done Miss Moul and the SEAL team!

 

 

Lunch times at The Polygon - Something for everyone!

 

It's fantastic to see ALL pupils taking advantage of the activities offered every lunchtime at The Polygon.

 

As I walked around school today there really was something for everyone. 

 

It was great to see so many boys and staff on the football pitch today!

Friday Fishing!

Every Friday afternoon pupils from all year groups have the opportunity to go fishing with qualified fishing coaches Mike and Rod from Warren Boat Angling Club .  

 

This week the pupils braved bitter weather conditions but despite very cold winds they didn't complain once and fished for an hour and a half catching fish and a family of crabs!

 

The pupils are also learning about conservation and taking part in a National project recording the specie of fish,  measuring the length and where it was caught.  

 

A great attitude and persistence was shown by all well done fishermen!

 

Pupils are also now working towards recognised fishing qualifications from Sport England.

It was great to see so many boys collecting certificates in our latest rewards assembly.

 

Well done boys and a big thank you to Mike and Rod!

 

 

Year 10 - Mondrian Art

Year 10 are learning about abstract art. The person I am learning about is Piet Mondrian, his paintings are over 100 years old.

Piet Mondrian created a movement in the art world for pattern and form. I am going to try and recreate like this.

Year 7 re-enactment of The Battle of Hastings!

Year 7 have had great fun this half term creating a re-enactment of The Battle of Hastings!

Not only did the students show some fantastic drama skills but also great understanding about the battle and causes.
