Readathon - Week 5

Well done to 3LB for winning the readathon cup on Friday; they read for a fantastic 1 hour and 35 minutes!

Independent Research in PSHE

                                       

 

As a school we are always promoting independent learning.

It was fantastic to see year 9 pupils in a PSHE lesson using the TalktoFrank website to find answers to their questions and further information on drugs use. 

Pupils then shared their findings with the rest of the class.

Our VLE - Doddle results for terms 1 and 2

Well done to everybody for these excellent results for completing pieces of work on our virtual learning environment - Doddle.  4581 peices of work completed so far this year!

Some highlights from term two were:

• we completed 1854 pieces of work (798 more than this time last year)
• had eight pupils complete work over a weekend
• 86% of pupils used the site.

St George's Day

During humanities this year we looked at the patron saints of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and how their flags make up the Union Jack. Today, April 23rd is St George's day.




This is the flag of St George and he is the patron saint of England, famous for slaying a dragon and rescuing a princess. But there are many interesting facts about St George and St George's day, did you know:

• It is customary for people to wear our national flower, a red rose, in their button hole.
• A red cross on a white background was St. George's emblem and was adopted by Richard the Lion Heart in the 12th century to avoid confusion in battle.
• St. George was thought to be a Roman Solider who protested against the Romans' torture of Christians.
• St. George was born in Turkey.
• St. George has never been to England.
• He was made patron saint of England in 1350 by Edward III.
• He is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal and Russia.

Readathon - Week 3/4

On Friday we saw the unveiling of the 'Readathon Champions' cup. Each week in  assembly the tutor group who have read for the longest period of time will be awarded with the cup. 

3GS were the first tutor group to win the cup; they read for a fantastic 3 hours and 18 minutes!

It was a close contest with 3HI just 8 minutes behind 3GS!

History of English Literature Timeline

Check out the new History of English Literature Timeline. You can locate this marvellous display outside Mrs. Saralis's classroom (Room 5). Feel free to investigate the richness and diversity of our literature from which our language has been woven.

Explore the evolution of English Literature from the previous centuries to the present day. 

The timeline includes a fascinating combination of iconic books such as The BFG, Animal Farm, Anne Frank's Diary and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night; the poets Imtiaz Dharker and Ted Hughes and one of today's most popular plays 'Blood Brothers'.

Remember to bring all your used batteries in today so we can see which tutor group has collected the most!

Don't worry if you have forgotten, you can still bring used batteries in to school for recycling as this will be an ongoing activity, ask our school eco champions for more information!

Egg at Marlands - Vote for Polygon!

EASTER  EGG COMPETITION AT THE MARLANDS SHOPPING CENTRE
Vote for us at The Marlands Shopping Centre using your shopping receipt, or on their Facebook page.
The Polygon School Egg will raise money For Alzheimer's Disease and shows all the art we love to do at school. The boys decided it should be marbling patterns again (like our Zebra sculpture for Marwell Zoo) and patchwork like our design for the new decoration of Reception at school. then came the inspired idea of it cracking open and everything that hatches from eggs coming out.

Go and see the 360 degree view of our egg and the creatures emerging: there is a spider, T-Rex, birds, echidna, platypus, and many eyes peering out. some are drawings, some are 3D attachments! all of the materials used were salvaged or re-used, following our Eco theme, including Mr. Hughes' door knobs and PE's old ping pong balls for eyeballs! All boys in the school had the chance to participate in this event that has gone on public display - amazing!

Polygon at The Tate Modern!

A mixed age group of our pupils were lucky enough to work the local art company InFocus on a project to produce examples for an interactive installation at The Tate Modern art gallery in London.
The installation was for 'Nada Airlines'  -  inferring you are going nowhere!

We had a great time making gauges, dials, panels, buttons, control sticks.....     everything you might find in a cockpit of an plane, but all saying the opposite of what you might expect. Some of our work was then used to start the cockpit and to inspire visitors as to how they could make their own additions.

As you can see from the photos from the Tate, the installation was high up the building in a corner window, giving the feeling of being in an actual cockpit, which then got filled by others' work.

 A fantastic experience for us, and Well Done Boys!
