Year 7 Powerboating

The year 7 boys had the opportunity to participate in a powerboating session on the Solent today. All boys were great ambassadors for the school and had a fantastic time!

During the session we all had the opportunity to take charge of the wheel and steer the boat at high speed. We were very lucky to have a sunny day and the boys really enjoyed putting themselves in line of the sea spray as we blasted across the waves!

They were warned they may get wet at the back!

Engagement Centre visit Southampton FC: We March On Exhibition

Southampton FC: We March On

This week the Engagement Centre visited the Sea City Museum who currently have an exhibition on the history of Southampton Football Club.

The boys particularly enjoyed seeing a replica of the FA Cup trophy that Saints won in 1976. They beat Manchester United 1-0 to win the cup.

The exhibition also had the shirt of Saints legend, Rickie Lambert, when he scored his 100th goal for the club. All his teammates signed the shirt and he loaned it to the exhibition to put on display for all the fans in the City to see.

Sailing Ragatta Community Cup

Sailing Regatta - Community Cup

We were very fortunate this week to be invited to take part in the 1st Community Cup Sailing Regatta in association with Southampton Boat Show. This week hosted a series of corporate events including a day where pupils could experience a day on board a Sunsail Match First 40s yacht.

Pupils from our Engagement Programme were lucky enough to attend and were matched with a 2 person crew for a day of sailing.

During the day our pupils used iPad navigation skills, learnt many nautical terms, work as part of a team setting up the sails and captaining the yacht.

We sailed out into the Solent towards the Isle of Wight hitting a top speed of 16 knots. The pupils had to navigate between the marked buoys and avoid the Isle of Wight ferries. We then turned and sailed across the Southampton Boat Show and Southampton Dockyard getting an up close look at the sixe of the shipping containers, some of which were holding 2000 containers.

We would like to thank theyachtmarket.com and Southampton City Council for the invitation to join in this wonderful day and very much look forward to next year's event.

KS4 Use Maths skills in PSHE lesson

KS4 have been working hard this week towards their AQA Level 2 in Personal and Social Education qualification.
They have been developing their knowledge and understanding of the potential implications of drinking alcohol. All pupils can know explain what is meant by 'percentage by volume' of an alcoholic drink.
A pupil from Morris House has under taken research with assistance from Cloud Wine who offered guidance and advice on safe alcohol consumption and how to work out units of alcohol.  This information was then taken back to school so all pupils could use their Math's skills to work out units of alcohol in commonly available alcoholic drinks and demonstrate the link between percentage by volume and units of alcohol.
Excellent research and Math's KS4 well done!

Teamwork in PSHE

We have had a great start to PSHE lessons this week. It's not only been fantastic to see pupils get to grips with new topics but also to see pupils working so well together in a team.
