Currently Learning on the Engagement Pathways

Many of our pupils have been working hard to prepare for their Functional Skills exams this summer. Functional skills are practical, nationally recognised qualifications in England and maths that equip learners with essential skills for everyday life, work and further education.  They focus on practical application rather than theoretical knowledge. They are a gateway to college for our pupils on the Engagement Pathway.

Recently, many of our pupils have been focusing on solving the four operations mentally:

And converting units of measure:

In English we have been identifying subjects and verbs in order to help punctuate sentences and writing letters or emails as part of writing assessments.

Currently Learning - Engagement Pathways

As part of every pupil’s timetable on the Engagement Pathways, 1:1 academic sessions are offered in Maths and English. Pupils work towards their Functional Skills qualifications and, in Years 10 & 11, GCSEs. Functional Skills qualifications range from Entry Levels 1,2 and 3 (pre-GCSE) to Levels 1 and 2 (GCSE level). All pupils work towards individualised targets that allow them to make progress in small, personalised steps.

The progress that many of our pupils are making is excellent to see. In maths, some of the areas we have covered in the last half term are:

  • Mental methods for multiplication and division
  • 2d and 3d shapes

During English, each pupil reads a book – many are reading Liccle Bit. For our writing currently, many pupils are looking at identifying subject, verbs, adverbs and adjectives to help form sentences and use punctuation accurately. Crucial skills for their upcoming tests and exams.

Working Your Maths Memory

During Maths lessons we focus on improving our ability to remember and apply what we have previously learned.

We find this enables our learners to work with increased independence and confidence, developing their self-esteem as learners.

The picture shows Year 7 children independently recording their responses during a Maths assessment. Their outcomes were excellent, well done for recalling your previous learning so effectively.

We have been learning about the life King Charles III in maths lessons, reading about his major life events and ordering them according to when they happened.

Maths Interventions

                                Maths Interventions

This year a number of pupils have been targeted for maths interventions. These pupils are working to catch up for missed time or looking to push themselves even further. The maths department have been working with pupils from across the school using resource from Edexcel.

These include the "Access to Foundation", "Target 3 and "Target 5" intervention books. We are hoping to need the "Target 7" books next year!

Well done to all the boys on their hard work.

RE Year 7 Hanukkah

Year 7 have had an excellent start to RE at The Polygon!
It's great to see pupils being respectful towards different Religions and taking part in games and activities which are celebrated in different faiths.
During the Autumn term year 7 have been exploring the concept of Identity and how it might  feel to have your Identity taken away.
It was fantastic to see pupils complete evaluations of their learning and produce extended pieces of writing. Well done keep working hard year 7!
