Fresh Water Fishing - Southampton Common

Since summer has arrived (for a little bit) we have moved to Southampton Common to try some fresh water fishing.

This involved using different rods and baits including maggots and sweet corn. This week was a great success and between us we caught about sixty fish including, Roach, Perch and Carp.

Forces at Woodmill

Forces at Woodmill

 After completing our work on forces, a group of year 7 and 8 pupils spent the morning at Woodmill Activity Centre to put the theory into practice.

 First we had to learn how to use our paddles to ensure we made the most of our effort as we propelled ourselves through the water. Did you know the paddles have a right and a wrong way to hold them?

Jack realised how hard it was to go in a straight line, well done for persevering Jack!

Football Euro's 2016 England v's Wales

Many of the pupils enjoyed watching England play as part of the Euros recently. The level of interest and enthusiasm was shared equally from the pupils and staff! 

Volcanoes KS3 Geography

As an explosive conclusion to our geography project on volcanoes KS3 carried out an experiment to erupt a model volcano!

Following instructions the pupils had prepared we saw many exciting eruptions.

The pupils worked well together in their groups to all contribute to the activity.

New pupils who will be joining us in September had the opportunity to try the experiment and really enjoyed seeing what lessons are like at The Polygon.

KS3 Geography

KS3 have been using many new skills in geography including map work, and learning the 7 different continents.

Sharing facts about animals found in Africa.

Using an Atlas as well as the internet to research the continents,

and presenting our findings with some fantastic handwriting!

Thank you to everyone that has come into the science room to see how the eggs were getting on. It's been amazing watching the whole process.

We've had 4 eggs 'pip', with the first one hatching during the early hours of Thursday, with another looking like it would hatch on Thursday. Unfortunately on Friday it, and another hadn't been successful, but we did have a final egg zip open and pop out while the Morris House boys were having science.

Over the weekend, the last born chick died, leaving us with only the one. This one had splayed legs, and after turning down Mr Penfold's offer of help, its has spent the weekend in a splint. This has worked brilliantly, and it's now walking much better.

Looking now for chicks of a similar age to keep it company.

 

Student blog of Marwell Trip

The Day at Marwell Zoo

On Wednesday 8^th June 2016, all 4 of the KS3 classes went on a school trip to Marwell Zoo for the day. As a school went by coach and the journey took 15-20 minutes.

When we arrived we met the Rotary club at the entrance, who gave us our tickets. First we saw the penguins and there was a penguin wearing a swim suit, because it helped him to swim. His name was Ralph.

Then we went to the cheetah look-out. There was a zoo keeper who told us about the cheetah’s, he said they bite at the neck to kill, as this suffocates their pray. He also showed us a skull and skin of a cheetah which we were allowed to touch, the skull was smaller then I expected. After this we went to a few play parks before we had lunch.

After lunch we went into the rhino enclosure because Mrs Cottle knew a zoo keeper who worked there so … yeah that’s was amazing. We were protected by large metal bars so we were safe. I got to touch the rhinos, they felt rough, because they rolled around in the mud a lot. The zoo keeper told us that the rhino is part of the hoof family, I never knew that. My group was the only group who got to do this so that’s awesome. Then we went back to school on the coach.

3LBs Day at Marwell Zoo

Chickens!

 

After a visit to Hamble Valley Poultry to pick up eggs for hatching, setting them up in the incubator and monitoring their weight loss and humidity, it's nearly time for them to hatch.

The eggs were candled to see if any or all were fertilised and it looks like we have one egg that wasn't fertilised, but hopefully 6 that were.

Keep watching in the next couple of days to see how many hatch.

Rocket Science 

Our seeds have grown and been measured and now it's time to send our results off with all the others across the country.
