On Monday 12th December we held a non-school uniform day. The School Council decided to donate the money raised to SCRATCH Southampton.

Pupils and Staff participated and raised £37.00

The Bread Experiment-Results

 To follow up from our cross-curricular learning bread experiment that we posted recently, here are our results and conclusions.

We concluded that washing our hands significantly reduces the amount of bacteria. This can be seen on the bread that had clean hands pressed onto it.

This was a great experiment to do and I think some of the boys were truly shocked at the results!

Cookery Lesson/Alternative session from Watching the World Cup

 Last week we showed the England game in the hall for pupils to enjoy. Some pupils did not want to watch the football so we decided to do a nice cookery session instead. The boys baked cherry bakewells and they looked even better than Mr.Kiplings!

Christmas Decoration Glass Bottle Painting with 3JG

 On Friday class 3JG decorated some glass bottles with cork lights for the tables on our Christmas dinner day. Each class group will have their own bottle that has been beautifully decorated by 3JG and some of our group may decorate bottles to take home. here are some of our lovely photos below (This activity kept them quiet for 40 minutes!)

Well done boys they look really festive and I cant wait to see them on the tables at Xmas!

International Men's Health Day Assembly

 International Men's Health Day Assembly

On Friday 25th November, Mr Adamson, held an assembly for the KS4 pupils. The theme of the assembly was International Men's Health Day.

Pupils heard a video clip from UK UFC fighter, Paddy "The Baddy" Pimblet, about his friends struggle with Mental Health. Pupils also looked at ways to deal with pressure, low mood, anxieties and mental health issues.

 School Council Meeting - December 2022

The School Council met last week and hosted Mr Betlem on a conversation on After School Clubs. The School Council organized a whole school survey and feedback was shared. Mr Betlem will look to change some after school activities in line with pupil feedback in the coming weeks.

The council also agreed that they would organize the Christmas Card post box this year. This will involve collecting cards, sorting them and distributing to class groups.

The council also discussed organizing a non-school uniform day. SLT have agreed that this will be held on Monday 12th December. Pupils and staff can either donate £1 or 100 points to participate. All money raised will be donated to a local charity.

Richard Taunton 6th Form College Assembly

On Friday 18th November we were visited by Richard Taunton 6th Form College for a KS4 assembly. The staff who came form the college commented on how well behaved the pupils were and they interesting questions they asked about the courses available.

Our thanks go to the college for taking the time to come and see the pupils.

Cross Curriculum Learning: Food Tech & Science

 KS4 have been learning about food safety and hygiene this term. To demonstrate the importance of washing your hand-especially before cooking, we have done an experiment to see whether or not washing our hands really does reduce bacteria and germs.

First we filled out our experiment prediction worksheet. Then we pressed our unwashed hands into a piece of bread.

We then washed our hands and did the same thing again with another piece of bread. We then sealed our pieces of bread in a clear zip-lock bag.

We will open our bags and observe the results next week. We will then complete the Conclusions section of our worksheet. Most of the boys predicated that mold would grow on the piece of bread that they pressed down on with their unwashed hands-some thought it may even grow mold in the shape of their hand! We will have to wait and see!

City College KS4 Assembly

 City College KS4 Assembly

Last week pupils in KS4 were invited to our first assembly together for a long period of time. 

Gary Crawford - Head of Foundation Learning, joined us to introduce the pupils to the facilities and courses on offer to our KS4 pupils.

Some pupils also approached Gary about applications to college after the assembly.

Our thanks go to City College for the assembly and we look forward to having a tour of the college in the coming weeks.

The Big Bang Project

A small group of our pupils were recently involved in the Big Bang Competition.

Forest School with 3HI & 3JG

 This half term pupils from 3HI and 3JG have been lucky enough to be first on list to attend Forest School at Itchen Valley Country Park. They have watched the season change as they have engaged in a range of activities. 

Ivan and Jack have enjoyed dressing up using the camo capes and face paints for their creative games.

This week we went exploring in the country park and came across some gruesome creatures that have been put up ready for Halloween. Each creature we found had an interesting fact and joke to go with it. 

The Lion King school project

  

This September the pupils undertook a two-week cross-curricular project based on ‘The Lion King’. This helped deepen their knowledge and recall their prior learning.

In English pupils explored African storytelling, as well as writing character descriptions, fact files and short stories.

In Art they looked at various different art forms such as water painting, creating masks, looking at Patterns and shadowing, as well as painting and drawing nature such as Acacia trees.

In Math's' the kS3 pupils looked at charts and graphs and produced bar charts of animal’s heights and weights.

For CDT the pupils created coasters with characters from ‘The Lion King’ on. This required measuring, cutting and painting their projects.

In Outdoor learning they played various games around matching animals to their skin types, as well as various team-building activities and exploring nature.

During cooking classes pupils tasted and created authentic African meals.

For PSHE the pupils explored the themes of Death and the Afterlife and what that means to them, as well as what it means to other people. 

In Science the pupils furthered their knowledge of charts and graphs by creating data of themselves compared to various animals. 

Lastly, for PE the pupils explored playing games that originated in Africa, working on their team building and leadership skills.

At the end of the two weeks’ pupils and staff were able to attend the Mayflower theatre to watch the production of ‘The Lion King’, which was a great experience and enjoyed by those who attended.

KS3 and KS4 English

 

During English this half term both KS3 and KS4 Pupils have been producing work inspired around ‘The Lion King’. KS3 pupils have been exploring Africa and African story telling. The pupils have created fact files around different animals and countries found within Africa, as well as creating ‘wanted’ posters for the characters in the story ‘The Lion King’. Pupils have also had the opportunity to write short stories on how different animals got their unique features, for example how the elephant got his trunk. The year 9 pupils have also been exploring the issues animals face such as global warming, war and the human population.

KS4 pupils have been creating character descriptions of the main characters from ‘the Lion King’. The pupils have also been exploring both the CGI and the animated films comparing and contrasting them as they look at the realism of movie magic. They also looked at how villains are portrayed within films and how all Disney villains look like Jafar from the film ‘Aladdin’.
