We were lucky enough to have another fabulous piece of the pupil's artwork displayed on a billboard in Southampton City Centre last week. Pupils worked at designing their own characters in conjunction with the Artist Kev Munday and Solent Showcase Gallery.

Readathon - Week 2!

The older boys have done much better this week, but they need to keep going to catch up with the fantastic readers we have in years 7,8 and 9!

Year 8's Speaking and Listening

3HI have been working really hard for their speaking and listening entry level assessment. 

Firstly, the boys worked in groups to discuss which three places they would like to go on a school trip. They came up with some brilliant ideas, such as going to a Transformers convention in China and a trip to the 'mega city' New York!

The boys worked well together and listened respectfully to each other's ideas. Once, they had decided on their ultimate trip they presented their idea to the class.

All of the boys who remembered to write down the number of minutes they read, in their reading logs, now have their rockets heading toward the sun in the library. 

As you can see, KS3 are leaving KS4 trailing behind. Can years 10 and 11 catch up with years 7,8 and 9 by next week?

Investigating the phases of the moon with 3HI

This half term 3HI have been learning about 'Our Universe', covering topics including our solar system; days, years and seasons; and our place in the universe.
Last week we created a model of the moon orbiting around the Earth using our bodies and tennis balls to investigate the different phases of the moon.

 

Using a lamp to represent the Sun, we used our bodies to represent the Earth and a white tennis ball was the Moon.  By rotating our bodies, we were able to see how the area of the moon lit by the Sun changes throughout a month, giving us the phases of the moon.

In the Autumn pupils cut back bushes, tidied and weeded the flower beds in the front garden at Morris House.

 

Now Spring is almost upon us it is time to add some life and colour back to the garden. Pupils from the Engagement Programme this week have been planting bulbs in the centre bed.

 

Hopefully we will have some spring colours to blog about soon.

 



Fishing

The rain didn't stop the boys fishing today at Southampton Common. Zack made a brilliant catch and caught the biggest fish we have caught there in over a year! Well done Zack on this lovely mirror carp. 

 

Readathon Launch!

Today during assembly, Mrs Saralis launched the Polygon Readathon. 

Every boy in the school has their very own rocket. The rockets will all start their journeys underneath Pluto on the display in the library. 

The fuel needed to fly to the next planet is one hour of reading!

Can you read one hour a week over the next nine weeks to make it to the sun? 

There is an exciting prize up for grabs for the boys who manage to reach the sun!

Risoul 2018 part ll

Risoul 2018 part II

Tuesday

This was a tough day for skiing. Having snowed steadily since Monday afternoon the pistes were covered in deep  the snow, the piste bashers worked through the night but by Tuesday morning there was still a few inches of soft snow on all the runs. Add to this a day of cloud and wind.

The boys showed a lot of courage and resilience to keep going back up the mountain even though the visibility was down to a few metres.

Wednesday

Wednesday was a much clearer day and boys returned to the mountain with increased enthusiasm to take advantage of the clear skies. 

Olvino being an expert free skier thougth that the boys were ready to a few jumps. Again we had different levels of success but all got back up and kept going.

Thursday

The boys continued to push themselves on what looks like being the day of the week for skiing. They tried to different skiing skills on Thursday. In the morning the tried a speed test. A test of nerves involving where you point your skis straight downhill and stick in an aerodynamic position. 

After this they tried their hand at a slalom course.

We have one more day of skiing left now. Olvino will be deciding on their skiing levels and giving awards after skiing on Friday.

Plants around the school

Today during Science, Zack planted some spider plants and some runner beans.
All our spider plants from last summer have grown, so we went round the school and gave every teacher a new plant to take care of.

Zack's care instructions:
1. Water your plant twice per week.
2. Keep your plant in a sunny place.

Congratulations to everybody for reaching the milestone of 4000 completed pieces of work on our VLE - Doddle.  We have also achieved this four weeks earlier when compared to last year!

Top 3 subjects for work completed on our Doddle are:

Risoul 2018 part I

Risoul 2018

This year we heading to a new base camp for The Polygon ski trip. We are moving a couple hundred miles south to the French resort of Risoul in search of snow. 

SATURDAY

Despite the conditions in Southampton all the boys and staff manage to get to school early on Saturday morning to start their journey. Minibus to Gatwick, then plane to Turin and lastly a coach to Risoul. Finally after 12 hours and a few delays we made it to Risoul. 

SUNDAY

All kitted up we met our instructor Olvino to begin our lessons. Olvino having 40 years of ski instructor experience is a master on the slopes. He quickly progressed the boys during the lessons and took the boys to the top of Risoul by the first afternoon.

Our Sunday nights activities involved a treasure hunt round the village of Risoul. The wining team being that of Mr Morley, Lewis and Alfie.

MONDAY

On Monday they boys kept progressing, Olvino pushing them to improve their technique and skills. In the afternoon we did a little bit of off-piste skiing. There was some successes and some fails, but everyone got back up and keep trying.

Here Arron is doing his best to get selected for the next winter Olympics big air competition. We finished Monday we a lovely fish and chips dinner and a movie as a group.

3GS Maths

3GS have been fantastic in Maths recently!

We have been covering a very difficult topic this term-angles!

Keep up the great work boys you are really getting the hang of angles and protractors!

Snow day at The Polygon!

Last Thursday the year 10 boys had a cookery exam, and despite the awful weather they all made it in!
After the exam they enjoyed the snow and then had a lovely long weekend-well done boys!
