ASDAN PSHE: Engagement Pathways

PSHE: Emotional Wellbeing

Pupils on the Engagement Pathway have been working through the PSHE Short Course ASDAN award. This has been quite successful through this year, with clear structure and easy to follow activities to support the learning content.

Module 1 of this course is Emotional Wellbeing. The aim of this module is to develop young people’s understanding of emotional wellbeing and mental health. It provides opportunities to learn about, and practise, strategies that recognise and support good emotional wellbeing.

Firstly, we learned about how being connected to others can improve emotional wellbeing and we explored how we can practice this in our own day to day lives. Pupils created posters on what activities could support improved mental wellbeing.

Next, we focused on common types of mental ill health, where pupils were given space to research different issues and learn more about illnesses which they may or may not have heard about before. Pupils did some great writing pieces about what they learned.

Following on from this, the pupils completed some work around recognising the early signs of poor mental health, and we created checklists on what we signs we can look for in ourselves and other people.

Finally, we looked at activities that can promote positive emotional wellbeing. We explored physical exercise, time outdoors, community participation and volunteering. Pupils were given the choice to then create a short film or a poster of their research.

Emotional Wellbeing in PSHE with the Engagement Pupils

Our PSHE current topic is Emotional Wellbeing. Most pupils are looking at how connecting with others can improve their own emotional wellbeing. We have been exploring emotions; what they look like, feel like; and how we can regulate them. The pupils have been doing a range of activities, such as posters to promote activities and ways to connect with people, card sort activities and mind maps.

Other we units we will cover throughout this module are:
- Common types of mental ill health
- Recognising the early signs of poor mental health
- Exploring activities that can promote positive emotional wellbeing.

These modules are all part of the fully accredited ASDAN PSHE Short Course Award and recognised by education providers.

In Asdan two groups have been completing a challenge on Aboriginal style art, we have looked at traditional art symbols and the groups have used their math's knowledge to measure out their boomerang shape. They then used their art and design knowledge to create a design on paper once happy with the design the wooden boomerangs were decorated using acrylic art pens.

ASDAN Life Skills

 ASDAN Life Skills

This year pupils in KS3 are participating in ASDAN lessons. They are working towards their Life Skills Award and need to complete a series of activities to gain enough credits to pass.

One of the challenges they are doing is to build famous landmarks in Minecraft. Using their cross curricular skills from ICT they have researched various famous buildings and selected one to build in the programme. Current projects include The Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Egyptian Pyramids. We look forward to seeing the results of the pupils ASDAN challenges in the coming months.
