GCSE Cooking-Layered Desserts

 Last week the year 11 boys completed the dessert part of their practical cookery GCSE. They had to make a layered dessert for a staff team of adults. The boys did so well and were all so proud of themselves (as were Mrs. RockMorton and Miss Long!)

They have all completed the first part which was to adapt a meatball recipe for children. Next they will be adapting and cooking a 2 course vegetarian meal. The practical part of the cookery makes up 60% of their final grade.

Chicken & Bacon Pasta-Year 9

 Yesterday 3DRB made chicken and bacon pasta in their cookery lesson. Two pupils asked to adapt their recipe and make a chicken and tomato pasta dish-these pupils were aware of recipe adaptations they could make and their pasta turned out well too. This group has some particularly capable cooks and their pasta dishes all looked lovely!

World Book day 2025

 World Book Day

For World Book Day this year we celebrated it in a variety of ways.

Reading challenge: The pupils had the opportunity to complete a reading challenge in school, it consisted of 15 challenges ranging from having to read a book or complete a set amount of time on Lexia to sharing  a joke they have found. They had three days in school in which they were able to complete as many of the challenges as possible. One of our year 10s Marcus managed to do it within a day! 

Dress up day: On World Book Day itself, in school staff and pupils were encouraged to dress us as characters from their favorite books, this included footballers from their autobiographies. Both pupils and staff came up with some great costumes this year. 

Waterstones trip:  On Friday 7th all the pupils that wanted to go took a trip down to Waterstones or The Works to collect their free World Book day book. All the pupils that attended did an incredible job of it and were complimented by staff members of those shops on how polite all the pupils were. 

Cookery After School Club:Burger Wraps

 This week we held the cookery ASC on Thursday instead of Monday as we usually do as staff were prepping for Target Review Day which was on Wednesday.

One of the boys suggested last week that we make burger wraps and we had a really good turn out for this club. 

Miss Long is always open to suggestions and this one went down a treat! Most of the boys ate their burger wraps then and there!

Next week we are making Smarties Party Cookies.

Year 7 Micro:bit

 Year 7 ICT - Micro:bit

In Year 7 this half term pupils have been learning how to use, and code, Micro:bits. These are small devices that have an LED light board, sensors to light and sound and various input buttons.

Pupils have learnt how to code them to play 20 Questions and Rock, Paper, Scissors (as seen below) and we will be using them next to send messages over radio frequencies.

As you can see, the pupils have really enjoyed this topic and are learning a great new set of skills. 

New Books!

We always love to hear your requests for new books in the library and Mrs Foster always gets very excited unpacking, stamping and giving them a new home! 

I’m sure these will be flying off the shelves very soon so pop into the library asap to pick your new read! 

 

Fruit Tasting with 3DRB

 3DRB recently expressed an interest in trying some new fruits. We mainly order from Asda so we ordered what we could-dragon fruit, mango and a pomegranate. The boys all tried them and we were impressed at how adventurous they were. Some of the other pupils came into the cookery room and also tried them! 

We will try to get more exotic fruits for you to try soon!

Polygon school take on Premier League Inspires challenge

 

Over the past half term the Premier League Inspires group have taken on the Inspires challenge. This is a competition that the majority of football clubs up and down the country have the chance to take part in. The challenge is based around a topic picked by the PL each year, this year's theme was gender equality.

The boys had to come up with an idea of how to improve or raise awareness of gender equality within Southampton. The group came up with the idea of creating badges to hand out to fans on a match day so they can let the fans know about this really important topic. 

Across Southampton 13 other schools also took part in the challenge coming up with ideas around this topic. Each school was given £50 to use to help get the project started. From this each school went to the stadium to deliver a presentation in a "dragons den" style presentation in front of 5 judges. The aim of this is 1 school from Southampton then progresses onto the next stage to compete against other clubs with the idea at Wembley!

Last Wednesday the Premier League Inspires challenge group had the opportunity to present their project to the panel of judges at the stadium. Although we didn't progress to the next round we did pick up the highly commended award. We will also still get the chance to make the badges and attend a game to hand these out.

We are really proud of the group as presenting in front of a group of professionals is no easy task!
