Forest School

As part of the outdoor education programme, 3GS and 3AW have been attending Forest Schools at Itchen Valley country park. The boys are learning how to build shelters and basic survival skills such as fire lighting and open fire cooking. All the boys have enjoyed learning in the forest and are looking forward to the next few weeks!

SEAL - Edible Emotions!

This week in SEAL pupil's have been working on how to recognise their feelings and emotions. As part of this pupil's were set the challenge of drawing how they felt on a biscuit using icing pens - edible emotions!

Engagement Programme Mountain Biking

This week the Engagement Programme went out to Deerleap in The New Forest for an afternoon of mountain biking.



 



The boys are working towards their Gears Programme Awards which involves demonstrating various different skills including brakes, gear changing, lifting the front wheel as well as bike anatomy.

 

1st Gear - Introductory mountain biking skills
2nd Gear - Developing mountain biking skills
3rd Gear - Consolidating mountain biking skills





Tyler is working towards his 1st Gear. Callum is now working towards his 3rd Gear after achieving Level 1 and 2 last year. 

 

 

 

 

 

Attendance Cup

Well done to 11SK for winning the most improved attendance cup in assembly this week! Mr Betlem and I are so pleased with all the effort you made. Shaun also won the £10 prize for the 100% attender of the week! It just shows it pays to come to school! Have a great weekend everyone!

Games Club - Thursdays After School

Today was the first session of a new after school games club run by Mr. Lloyd.

The aim of the club is to bring together pupils from across the different year groups; allowing them to be creative, challenge themselves and challenge others in a variety of activities.

Key stage 4 careers at the boat show

On Tuesday 20th September we took our year 10 and 11 boys to the Southampton Boat show.

The boys were able to listen to interesting guest speakers, and watch the latest careers film made by British Marine which promoted all the possible careers in the marine industry. It was great to see the boys start to think about the future, transition, college, apprenticeships and possible careers! It was a valuable experience and during the day the boys were able to explore the showground, and even look around the famous Sunseeker luxury yachts

Southampton’s Maritime Archaeology Trust

SS Shieldhall

On Friday 16th of September pupil's were invited on board the Steam Ship Shieldhall to investigate the work of Southampton's Maritime Archaeology Trust.
The trust highlighted that fact that many historic remains from the war lie, largely forgotten, in and around our seas, rivers and estuaries.

The day was split into two sessions.
In the first session the trust showed us how they do their research and investigate these hidden remains by completing dives around the English Channel.

 

Pupil's had the opportunity to try on some diving gear, including; A dry suit, goggles, oxygen tanks, flippers, torches, and other equipment.

Below is an example video showing how the wrecks are explored.

Once we had tried on the equipment pupils were shown some artefact's that were recovered from different wrecks.

We had a go at drawing and describing them in a way that others would be able to identify them.



The volunteers also highlighted some areas of the ship that the artefacts came from that we could look for when we explored the ship in the afternoon.

In the second session we were split into small groups to be shown around the ship by the crew of the Shieldhall.

Overall pupil's had a great time and we will be looking visit more ships in the future.

Friday Fishing

Last week saw our first Friday fishing trip of the new academic year. We are currently fresh water fishing on Southampton Common with our instructors Mike and Rod from Warren Boat Angling Club.

Each week all pupils have the opportunity to be selected to go fishing on a Friday afternoon. This is a great opportunity for the pupils to learn a new skill, work out of the classroom and appreciate the environment around us.



We had a very successful first week and all many fish were caught by all pupils.

 Last year Jack and Deacon won awards for their success in fishing!

Paralympic Penalty Shootout

Some of our students have been learning about disability in Breakfast Club to celebrate the Paralympics in Rio this September.  After watching a blind football match, we thought it was a great idea to have a blind penalty shootout!

After putting on a blindfold, a lot of students realised how skilled the blind players in the Paralympic football teams are, as only a couple of boys managed to score a penalty!

The keystage  4 boys had a fantastic start to the football season yesterday with a 10-10 draw against Coxlease school.

All boys played their socks off in a very competitive and high speed game. Special mentions go to Luke for scoring 3 goals on his school debut.
