Recent Dishes at Morris House

The boys on Engagement Pathways have been cooking some great dishes over the last few terms.

It is always interesting to see the things they come up with to share with family and friends.

A highlight was a beautiful Kinder Bueno cheesecake!

There have been some good demonstrations of knife skills and other useful utensils in the kitchen.

We also experimented with cooking mackerel in the tin, which was a fun experiment and a different way to cook something!

Cooking at Morris House!

Over the last term the Engagement Pathways pupils have cooked up some absolute storms in the Morris House kitchen alongside Miss Thom whilst developing their culinary skills. The pupils really enjoy the practical learning, and a lot of the dishes they make go towards AQA Unit awards too.

Here's some of the dishes produced in recent sessions:

Rhyo made Chicken Alfredo which was delicious! He seasoned everything himself and he really has a good taste for flavours! Miss Thom even convinced him to add some spinach which even Rhyo admitted, definitely elevated the dish!

Aaron made some really delicious Chocolate Lava cakes which he was very proud of, and they were perfectly gooey in the middle, yet with a nice crust on the top. Aaron sat down and enjoyed these with the Engagement staff and they were absolutely delicious. Well done Aaron!

Jack made a Shepherds Pie, and showed off his great knife skills chopping up all his vegetables. Jack took this home to share with family and get their verdict on his cooking expertise!

Marzell made some great chicken burgers! He battered and seasoned his own chicken and then constructed it all into homemade chicken burgers! Marzell really enjoys sharing food he's made with other pupils in school and getting feedback from his friends, so this is what he does every week.

Last but not least, Ewan made some Greggs inspired Festive Bakes which had chicken, bacon, stuffing, and cranberry sauce all in a creamy white sauce. Ewan made these last year as they are his favourite Christmas and he did really well to remember how to make them more independently this year! Just look at that Sage & Onion breadcrumb crust on top!

Cooking will always be accessible to pupils who engage well and Miss Thom really encourages the pupils to have creative freedom of what they cook, whilst also supporting them in choosing things they can recreate at home on their own. Its also the opportunity to be proud of what they make, so gaining the certificates and also sharing food with the team whilst at school really helps make that happen!

PSHE- Oral health workshops

We are proud to work in partnership with a range of amazing charities and organisations across Southampton, helping our students to become familiar with the support available and confident in accessing these services whenever they need them. Today, we were delighted to welcome Rita Slevin, Oral Health Educator, who worked with our KS3 pupils to deliver an engaging and practical session on oral health. KS4 students will have the opportunity to work with Rita in January 2026.

Rita first heard about our outstanding school when she saw Miss Long deliver a speech while collecting our Gold HH5 award. She was so impressed by the dedication and care we demonstrate in supporting our students’ health and wellbeing that she wanted to contribute directly by running workshops to complement our PSHE and HH5 curriculum.

We cannot thank Rita enough for the practical lessons, thoughtful discussions, and hands-on activities she delivered. KS3 pupils not only made excellent progress towards the new 2025 PSHE framework, but they also gained knowledge and skills that will contribute to lifelong oral health. These sessions highlight the importance of making informed choices, understanding personal wellbeing, and building habits that will benefit our students long into the future.

Her support is a fantastic example of how partnerships with local experts enrich our curriculum and help students apply their learning in meaningful, real-world contexts.

Thank you Rita!

External Provider: Forest Schools

Every Thursday, a group of the pupils on the Engagement Pathways take part in a Bushcraft, an alternative provision ran by John from Youth Options at Itchen Valley Country Park.

The boys learn to chop wood, build a fire and cook a variety of things each week including fried chicken, noodles, burgers, curry and rice, chilli and rice, sausages, fried doughnuts, pancakes, popcorn and marshmallows.

The boys get the opportunity to explore the outdoors in a way they wouldn't usually, and learn from professionals who are passionate about this too!

Year 8 Food Studies

Year 8 had fun making bread rolls, we found a recipe that avoided having to prove the dough.
The boys showed off their skills to Mr Penfold during a lesson observation, they were able to tell him that bread is a carbohydrate and that flour is made from wheat. We even did a little bit of maths when we divided the dough into 8 equal parts!
