Engagement Programme at SoCo Music

 

 

This week pupils form the Engagement Programme completed their half term project at SoCo Music located at Hightown Youth Centre.

 

 

This is part of an on-going 2 year project designed to promote music within our school and give the pupils a better understanding of song writing, music production and performance.

 

 

 

 

For the past 2 sessions our pupils have been having a master class form the SoCo staff in music production using Logic Pro X on the iMac's in their music studio.

Revision!

Now exam season is in full swing our pupils are working really hard to get in as much revision as possible.

Anthony, James and Shaun did a fantastic job in an RE revision quiz today. Their enthusiasm, confidence and range of knowledge was great to see.

Lets hope we see marks like this in the exam!

Friday Fishing

This week we were back to sea fishing at Town Quay. The weather is really starting to warm up now and this is better for the fish so we were hoping for some good catches.

We used a new bate this week, Sand eels! These are small fish that burrow in the sand on the sea floor

Unfortunately the fish still didn't want to make an appearance but we did have more success catching this velvet crab in our net. Alfie was brave enough to hold the crab correctly by himself!

We also had a first in our net this week of a couple of jelly fish! The boys enjoyed spotting these in the water and when we caught some we could carefully hold them with gloves in case they were stingers.

It was a great sunny afternoon at fishing this week and the pupils continue to learn and enjoy this activity.

Engagement Programme - Map Reading and Geocaching

 

 

This week the Engagement Programme learnt map reading skills which enabled them to do a Geocache in the New Forest.

 

 

Firstly the pupils used OS maps to locate the school and the Geocache destination of Godshill Inclosure near Fordingbridge.

 

 

 

 

In order to find the location of the caches pupils had to locate them on a map and decode clues that would lead them to their approximate position.

 

 

 

 

 

From there we travelled to Godshill Inclosure, followed the coordinates, and

hunted for the caches.

 

 

 

 

 The group signed the log books in the caches that they found and we left a Polygon Ambassador Badge in one for other Geocache hunters to find.

 

 

 

This activity was a great way for the pupils to transfer the skills that they had learnt in the classroom and put them to use in a practical setting in the New Forest.

 

The pupils managed to find 6 out of 6 on their geocache hunt.

WorkSkills - No Limits Drugs and Alcohol Awareness Workshop

 

 

This week we were visited by No Limits. They came in to school to deliver a workshop to the Year 9's and 10's on Alcohol and Drugs Awareness.

 

 

 

 

Pupils participated in discussions on the adverse effects of drugs and alcohol on your body. They also had a practical demonstration, using "Flies Eye" glasses, on the impact of alcohol on your vision and ability to make decisions clearly.

 

 

 

All of the pupils found the workshop very beneficial and informative. Our thanks go to No Limits for providing the workshop for us.

Engagement Programme - Moors Valley Country Park

 

 

 

 

On Thursday 28th April the Engagement Centre visited Moors Valley Country Park. The pupils made the most of the Adventure Trail using all of the equipment and free resources that the Country Park has on offer there.

 

 

 

 

The pupils had a great time on our outdoor P.E. lesson.

 

 

 



WorkSkills - Learning to be Financially Capable

This half term pupils in KS4 have been working on the topic of Learning to be Financially Capable. We have been looking at personal budgets, savings, different monetary transactions, financial risks/rewards and debt management.

 

Here a Year 10 pupil takes responsibility for writing out group discussion answers on savings and their benefits and consequences.



Reading and Phonics Intervention

Every morning during breakfast club Miss Long works 1:1 with particular children who may need extra reading or phonics practice

Children can eat their breakfast whilst doing their activity and most children enjoy this

Leon wanted to play a phonics card matching game today-he was very good at it!

Friday Fishing!

 

It was a pleasure to take 5 pupils freshwater fishing  Friday Afternoon with coaches Mike and Rod from Warren Boat Angling Club.

 

Unfortunately, the fish weren't biting but we enjoyed being outdoors, the peace and quiet, watching the water rats, seeing who was brave enough to hold a handful of maggots and looking for frogs!

 

Hopefully we will have better luck next week!
