As part of every pupil’s timetable on the Engagement Pathways, 1:1 academic sessions are offered in Maths and English. Pupils work towards their Functional Skills qualifications and, in Years 10 & 11, GCSEs. Functional Skills qualifications range from Entry Levels 1,2 and 3 (pre-GCSE) to Levels 1 and 2 (GCSE level). All pupils work towards individualised targets that allow them to make progress in small, personalised steps.
The progress that many of our pupils are making is excellent to see. In maths, some of the areas we have covered in the last half term are:
During English, each pupil reads a book – many are reading Liccle Bit. For our writing currently, many pupils are looking at identifying subject, verbs, adverbs and adjectives to help form sentences and use punctuation accurately. Crucial skills for their upcoming tests and exams.

This term pupils have been heard at work creating extended pieces of writing in all subjects!
In Mathematics they have been writing about how to work out times tables and addition.
In Art they have been looking at the shapes and what the Earth looks like.
For PE they have been looking at diet and writing about what changes someone has made how they have effected the person.
Within cross-curricular around school Science and PSHE pupils writing about their trip to Life-Lab and Mathematics pupils writing about their recent Outdoor Learning trip to SWAC.
PSHE pupils have also been showing their cross-curricular learning by writing about the importance of physical exercise.
In Technology they have been exploring different products and designing their own, writing about what products they have taken inspiration from for their deigns.
For RE they have been looking at creation and writing their own theories and ideas down, as well as retelling the Christian creation story,
Finally for English KS4 pupils have been writing newspaper articles and letters, whilst KS3have been looking at writing tension and world wars, writing short spooky stories and poems.
All Pupils have worked very hard on their extended writing pieces and should be very proud of themselves!
On Thursday 20th a handful of our year 8 and 9 pupils got to meet author Yarrow Townsend to discuss her new book and to take part in a creative writing workshop.
The pupils had an hour session sat in the sunshine on blankets, reading extracts from her book, discussing the types of birds seen in the city and then writing what about what they think it would be like to be a bird going on a journey, as well as creating maps birds might take for future story writing.
It was a great session, where pupils interacted and engaged with nature, encouraging imagination and supporting their creative writing skills. Thank You Yarrow!
