Outdoor Learning Autumn 1.

Outdoor Learning Autumn 1

During our outdoor learning lessons the pupils have been developing their team working skills a new tutor groups. The boys have shown resilience when faced with new challenges and losing in games. They have engaged with learning new team games and working with peers that they do not always work with. They have also built trust through activities such as blind folded mazes and trust falls.

When faced with challenges and adapting to the different rules to a new game the boys took their time to understand what was asked of them and the main objectives of the lessons were. Once they understood that, they were able to break down step by step instructions given to them when required. For example, when the group of pupils scored points using team work it was important to highlight the impact and the reward working as a team will get them.

The boys have been demonstrating their ability to work and motivate each other within a team in game settings through communication and listening to each other. They worked together to get the outdoor learning area clear and ready to do other activities after half term.

Year 7 Art

The Year 7s have been working on colour theory unit and learnt how to mix and blend to create secondary colours during art lessons.

Wonderful week for 3LB

3LB have had their most successful week so far at The Polygon. They have focussed on increasing the number of respect points they gain, this has helped them improve their behaviour overall. All have gained at least 100 points this week, very well done!! As well as this they have all achieved 100% attendance, which is excellent. Consequently, they won the highest group attendance award and the most improved attendance award. To top it off Bradley went on to win the individual attendance prize. Very well done boys, Miss Harrop and I are very proud of your progress and attitude.
3LB Double cup winners
Brad - couldn't believe his luck ... hard work really does pay off!

Remembrance Day

3LB took a full and active part in remembrance day activities in school. We reflected on what and why we remember and being respectful. Ivan read a war poem to the class, we observed the two minute silence with a popular radio channel and created poppy pictures in art.
Ivan reading to the class, very well done, you were fantastic!

Mental Health and Well-being: The Joy of Plants

Plants have proven to have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, and there are many ways that you can incorporate this into your daily lives. A recent survey showed that 60% of people in the UK feel happier when surrounded by plants, and since lockdown more and more people have felt the benefits of houseplants and plants in general. I am one of those people and have become quite green-fingered as you can see from the photo of some of my plants below:

Some of my various plants and cuttings

“The Joy of Plants” website: https://www.thejoyofplants.co.uk/

Has some interesting information on “Forest Bathing”, Mindfulness and Air Purifying plants. Shinrin-Yoku: Forest Bathing is becoming increasingly popular as due to its health benefit and that fact that its free! Check out the website link to find out more about this.

Concentration Matters

All our learners are trying hard to improve their concentration, which has been affected by long spells of often working alone at home during lock down.

In maths we are encouraging learners to record independently, identify the equipment they need to answer a question and increase the pace at which they work.

We are very pleased with the children's attitude to learning, well done!

Marcus and Tarkan fully focussed!

Data Detectives

Year 7 have been collecting data from other children in school and finding the mean, mode, median and range.

They used iPads to create bar graphs and pie charts to display the information effectively.

Year 7 Go to the Cinema for the First Time

Year 7 have settled in very well so far this Autumn. They are working well in lessons and beginning to make a good contribution to our school, helping with recycling and taking part in School Council meetings. Their tutors are so pleased that they took them to the cinema as a reward to see, Ron's Gone Wrong, their behaviour was excellent and they were a pleasure to spend time with in public. They represented our school very successfully.
