RE: Day of the Dead

Year 7 have had lots of fun studying 'Death and Mexican Day of the Dead as their second RE concept following the Living Difference Curriculum

Fantastic discussions have taken place and all pupils across year 7 are communicating respectfully with each other and learning to give and describe their opinion. They have learnt that with some topics there is no right or wrong, or black and white answer and it comes down to personal experience and personal choice. They have also learnt to think for themselves and that it's OK to have a different opinion from your classmates and that with some topics we all have different views. As long as we are respectful to others, it's OK to disagree.

We believe a practical approach to RE is not only engaging for pupils but really helps secure key vocabulary and extend discussions in a non-formal environment. Here are some photos of Year 7 setting up their Ofrenda. People create ofrendas (altars) to honour the deceased. The altars are a space to remember loved ones and light candles to guide the spirits.

The altars can include:

pictures of the deceased

* items they were fond of

* something to eat

* candles

* flowers

* gifts

Platinum Jubilee Preparations

In Citizenship we have been learning about the Royal Family and the up coming Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Pupils in Year 7 have been working hard to create designs that could possibly be used to make flags for a community project in Southampton. It's been great watching the pupils designs develop, I cant wait to see the finished result! 

PSHE - Families

 

In PSHE we have been learning about Relationships and Families.

Pupils can identify and describe different relationships, different families and different family members. They understand and can use key terms respectfully such as gay, lesbian, same-sex, single parent, fostered, adopted, married and civil partnership. Pupils have also been identifying features of healthy and unhealthy relationships. 

We have been using our new PSHE resources to create a representation of our own families which led to fantastic discussions between pupils!

KS4 PSHE - Parenting

KS4 pupils have been learning about Sex and Relationships In PSHE.

Pupils, understand the facts about the full range of contraceptive choices, efficacy and options available, facts around pregnancy including miscarriage, understand that there are choices in relation to pregnancy (keeping baby, adoption, abortion) and where to get further help and how different sexually transmitted infections including HIV/Aids, are transmitted, how risk can be reduced through safer (including condom use) and the importance of testing.

In PSHE, we like to use as many practical resources for pupils as possible  We have all been fascinated with our new life like birth dolls, complete with the pelvis, vagina, placenta, and umbilical cord. Roch, showed great maturity playing midwife and cutting the cord.  Sean and Oscar were very caring in holding our newborn and Tyler did a fantastic demonstration during our contraception lesson. Well done KS4!

How amazing is that?!

Healthy High 5-Nature Walk

 Today we went for a walk through the local woods as part of our healthy high 5 lesson. The sun was shining and it was lovely to see the boys so interested in the little creatures we found in the stream. We looked them up and decided they were Angel Shrimp. Next time we will take a little jar with us so that we can bring them back to school and look at them under the microscope.

Year 7 ICT Microbits

This spring term Year 7 classes have been working with Microbits. This device they have been using is a pocket-sized computer that introduces them to how software and hardware work together. 

It has an LED light display, buttons, sensors and many input/output features that, when programmed, the pupils can interact with it and their peers. 

This is a great way in teaching them to use cognitive skills, problem solving and making a solution if the coding does not go to plan.

We have been coding to play games like rock, paper, scissors and guessing games like '20 Questions' programming the button A to say 'yes; and button B to say 'no' and then pressing both buttons after guessing the animal is to reveal the answer. The year 7 choose the subject of animals for 20 Questions. In making this game they were able to work and enjoy the process in computing the microbits. 

After completing the Tasks set in class over the spring term so far, each pupil has completed the task successfully. Even when completing the work, many were still enthusiastic to extend their study making there own coding on the microbits.

Owen was really chuffed with the 8 bit game he had programmed. The 8 bit game coding consisted of more inputs on the coding and the classes still continued to have resilience to try and complete the coding. 

The rest of the term will be spend in developing their skills they have accomplished in recent lessons to go on to the next level for microbits and coding. 

We are moving on to focus on making animations with the microbits.

Hogland's Park with 3BR

 Last Friday 3BR went to the park in town for the afternoon. This trip was planned for Mental Health Week but as some of you may remember, we had storm Eunice that week and could not go! The pupils were so disappointed we had to rearrange it. We walked down to the park all through town and the whole class were very well behaved. It was a lovely afternoon in the sun and we will be going again soon.
