Dib Dib Dib

DIB DIB DIB

Roch, Alfie and James displaying the nearly completed dibbers

Due to a generous donation from the Rotary club who have given the Polygon 1000 Crocus bulbs, the boys were tasked with making some dibbers on the Lathe.

James shows us the dibber we are trying to recreate.

Tyler has a good understanding of the Lathe

James uses a fine sanding paper to make the wood smooth.

Reece on the Sander to round off the Dibber.

Voila!  Not a bad effort guys.

Soldering On

The year 8's have been getting to grips with some soldering this term.

Tashinga's concentration should pay off.

Soldering a small PCB takes dexterity, coordination and concentration.

The boys are willing to give it a go though.

Well done. Tashinga's and Harley's efforts produce a working led lamp.

Now they have the boards working, they will have to come up with their own ideas of what to make with them. It will be interesting to see the results.

RE- Stewardship

In RE, the older boys in KS3 are looking at the concept of Stewardship and debating who they believe is responsible for protecting and caring for our planet.

We have been looking at examples of awe and wonder on our amazing planet. We have viewed many different images such as the Northern Lights, the clear blue oceans of the Maldives, the animals that inhabit the rainforest and have viewed clips from David Attenborough documentaries.

Using National Geographic Travel magazines the boys have explored images they believe represent 'Awe and Wonder' and have made some fantastic collages.

We will be moving on to discuss religious responses to the question 'who is responsible for our planet?' and the religious idea that people have been given a special responsibility to be in charge of Earth, to protect and care for it. We will also be looking at the effects of modern lifestyle and the consequences we face if we continue to put more strain on our planets resources.

Black History Month

From the 1st- 31st October, we as a school celebrate Black History Month. This is an opportunity for the boys to learn about influential black people throughout history. As a school, we believe this is important for our boys to learn about as it enables them to develop a better understanding of the world we live in. Building knowledge and understanding of historical events and trends, enables the boys to develop a much greater appreciation for today's current events.
Although we take part in celebrating Black History Month we also continue to learn about the important contributions of Black people to Britain all year round within our PSHE and RE curriculum.

Year 7 are currently learning about contributions to the music and film industry. We are looking specifically at Nottinghill Carnival and the Marvel Oscar winner Black Panther, paying our respects to Chadwick Boseman. Black Panther has been called a groundbreaking celebration of black culture and much more than a superhero's journey. The image of black panther represents bravery, excellence and black culture.

Year 8 will be studying amazing scientists, mathematicians and sporting heroes. We will be watching  Hidden figures, the untold story of three African- American, female mathematicians who helped win the Space Race as they dealt with sexism and racism from their colleagues and society. As hidden figures is a true story it provides the boys with an engaging way of learning about influential Black Women.

Year 9 are looking at Harriet Tubman and the history behind Black History Month. They will be watching the film 'Harriet' as a way of learning about Harriet Tubman's incredible story to freedom. She was an American abolitionist and political activist. Born into slavery she escaped and made further missions to rescue others. She also served as an armed scout an spy for the Union Army in the American Civil War and later was an activist in the movement for Women's suffrage.

Year 10 and 11 are learning about British Black History and ordering events in chronological order creating large timelines. Particular focus is paid to the story of Dido Elizabeth Belle who was a British heiress. Her mother was born into slavery and her father was Sir John Lindsey a British  naval officer who took Belle with him when he returned to England in 1765 after her mothers death. Pupils are also looking at the Tudor era, WW1 and and the positive impact of the Windrush generation after WW2.

Democracy at The Polygon - Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy results!

Every year at The Polygon School we learn about democracy and the importance of voting in an election. We are currently still in the process of voting for our class school council representatives but I am pleased to announce after an exciting build up and election we can now reveal the new Head and Deputy Head boy of The Polygon School 2020-2021!

Huge congratulations goes to Jaiden on becoming Head Boy and Ryan for being voted Deputy Head Boy!

In our school we believe democracy is extremely important for our boys to learn about. The Head Boy voting system is very similar to how, in the future, the boys will be voting for the leaders of the country. The boys each had their own individual ballot paper and voted for the candidate they believed was approachable, a good role model and would thrive in the position of Head Boy. With only two votes between Deputy and Head Boy, this was the closest vote to date!

A huge thank you to all the staff and boys who took part in this very exciting election!

Technical award in Health and Fitness

4SK have made a flying start to their NCFE level 1/ 2 award in Health and fitness. The boys have started to learn about the different body systems. It was really nice to see Sean and Oscar working so well together in class today investigating the structure of the knee joint. Both have tried really hard with the presentation in their books and should be proud of the work they have produced so far. Keep up the levels of engagement and effort! Well done!
