 A Mother's Day Surprise

Tashinga wanted to make his mum a nice surprise for Mother's Day.

He cut the shape with a Fret Saw.

He sanded the shape to take the edges off.

Painted and dried the base coat.

Voila! A few nice flowers and the project is complete.  You can't beat something that's made by yourself.

A Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers this Sunday.

World Book Day at The Polygon School

World Book Day 2021

The pupils in school today have been having fun taking part in a range of activities to celebrate world book day. 

All year groups took part in a Scavenger Hunt looking for pictures of book covers hidden in the school grounds. They had to use letters and corresponding numbers written at the back of the cards to create the word IMAGINATION.

Everyone who took part in this activity and completed the word puzzle was able to choose one of the books below as a reward.

During English lessons, students were making their own book marks and re-creating their favourite book/TV characters. They absolutely loved experimenting with air drying clay!

We also implemented cross-curricular learning in other lessons to celebrate World Book Day. In Art the pupils were using watercolour pictures of popular children books as an inspiration to make their own paintings. In Citizenship everyone had an opportunity to do a quiz.

In Focus Arts Awards at the Polygon School

 

Some of our pupils have been doing their Arts Award with "In Focus" on a Friday. Here are some snaps of  Rhys who is currently doing his Silver award. As part of this award he has chosen "sports photography" as his focus. Ryan, who is currently doing his Bronze award offered to help out by being a sports model for the morning!

Gaining an Arts Award is a great achievement as it takes a lot of hard work and self-directed learning, especially as you move up from Bronze to Silver and from Silver to Gold.

Big thanks to Faye and Xav from "In Focus" as without them this would not be possible.

10,000 Steps-a-day Challenge

According to the End Child Poverty coalition, 16,074 children in Southampton were living in poverty in 2018-2019. Research also shows that families with the lowest 20% of household income are 3 times more likely to have mental health problems.

In order to raise awareness and fight food poverty and insecurity, 26 Polygon School staff members joined the Food Insecurity Awareness Fundraiser initiated by City Catering Southampton who feed local school children and vulnerable adults across the city. 

Our aim is to do at least 10,000 steps a day each for every day in March and collectively raise £1,300.

Plastic Recycling

 Why recycle milk bottle tops?

When we recycle milk cartons, we have to remove the milk bottle tops and put them in general waste as not all recycling centres can recycle them. This is a lot of plastic going to landfill, but there is a way to stop this and raise money for charity at the same time.

Each of our tutor groups collect milk bottle tops, including everyone in the staff room, so they can be taken to APR in Eastleigh. APR process plastic on a large scale, but also recycle milk bottle tops and share the proceeds out amongs local charities such as Mencap, Rose Road Association, Dorset & Someset Air Ambulance and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

It takes tonnes of tops to raise money, but every top not in a landfill can be reused to make new items such as traffic cones or garden toys.

Well done to everyone at The Polygon for helping the environment and supporting local charities.

Mindfulness walks in the woods with 3JB

During free time recently, some of the boys have asked if we can go for a walk in the woods nearby. We have really enjoyed being outside and noticing all of the wildlife and nature in the city centre😃
