Life Lab 4NA

LifeLab is a unique, state-of-the-art teaching laboratory dedicated to improving adolescent health by giving school students opportunities to learn first-hand the science behind the health messages given to them in the Science and PSHE curriculum in school.   

The pupils all participated in numerous experiments and said the opportunity to use high tech equipment in a real hospital was amazing! 

The staff at LifeLab not only provided excellent resource packs for all pupils but lessons were tailored to  meet pupils needs and were not only engaging but ambitious. The enthusiasm from staff to promote a love of learning and personal wellbeing was infectious from the moment we entered the organised and inspirational lab. We cant thank staff enough and look forward to returning next year!

Diversity Day 2024

The Polygon School is celebrating School Diversity Week 24th-28th June. 

As part of our efforts to ensure our school environment is a place where every pupil can realise their potential, we will be joining tens of thousands of pupils and teachers taking part in School Diversity Week across the country to celebrate equality in our school.  

Our school council decided five years ago the way in which they would like to celebrate this is a non-school uniform day where pupils can dress in a way which reflects their identity and respect each other’s choices. This has become an annual event for the school that everyone looks forward to. This year non-school uniform day will be on Tuesday 25th June.  This is optional for pupils and there is NO charge as this is a celebration of the diversity in our school not for a charity.

We hope you will support the school in celebrating Schools Diversity Week and the education of equality, diversity and inclusion for all in our school. 

Alongside our anti-bullying and safeguarding policies, taking part in School Diversity Week is an important way of actively supporting acceptance of everyone in our school community no matter their age, background, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or ability. We are excited to see our school community come together again and demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive school environment where every young person can be themselves and thrive. It is a chance to explain to all our students the importance of diversity in the world we are preparing them for.

School Council project

 School Council project

Recently the school council were given a small budget, secured by Andrea Faustino our Chair of Governors, in order to move forward on one of their suggested projects.

They wanted to add some colour to the school grounds by painting the school benches.

Colours were chosen and purchased and work was started on the benches outside the Art room. Below are some pictures of the progress so far. We look forward to seeing the finished benches soon and well done to the pupils for all of their hard work painting them.

Personal Development Project

This week our pupils have been working hard on a project to develop the outdoor learning area and have designed and created a sensory path. 

Below is a picture of what the area looked like before we got started. 

During the first day pupils had to show great resilience and determination as they cleared the path and dug down to make room for the paths frame. The frame was made from old pallets that the boys carefully dismantled and then screwed together to create 5 equal sections. Pupils then used a spirit level to ensure the frame was perfectly level. 

On the second day the pupils needed to fill the sections with hardcore to create a sturdy foundation, mix up concrete and use sharp sand to prepare each section for its different decorative finish. 

The first section consisted of the brick pavers, which were laid on a level bed of sharp sand. The pupils created their own design and got Mr Bartlett to cut in half the bricks they needed to finish their design. They then filled the joints with kiln dried sand.   

Section 2 is made up of wooden rounds. The boys had to cut each piece to size and wedge them together in the space provided. It was surprising how many they needed to cut! This was laid on a bed of concrete. 

Section 3 had to be concreted and levelled before the boys were able to carefully sprinkle small white decorative stones on top. They then had to carefully use a piece of wood to tamp them down and sink them slightly into the concrete. 

Section 4 is made up for logs cut in half length ways. They have a very rustic look but still had to be cut down to size to fit into the frame work, so some very careful hand sawing was needed. These were then laid onto a concrete bed to prevent them from moving.

Last but not least, the final section was prepared with a concrete base ready for pebbles to be put into position, they were carefully placed by pupils to look aesthetically pleasing. 

Finally we had to cover the path up to protect it from the rain over night. 

Well done to all the boys involved, the path looks amazing. They should all feel so proud of what they have achieved. They even stayed after school to make sure it got completed. 

   

Box Theatre Workshop

This week we have been lucky enough to have The Box Theatre Company in school delivering drama workshops to both KS3 and KS4. The boys were learning about a new style of performance called platform theatre. This involved restricting their performances to a gym mat and they were not allowed any assistance from props, sets, costumes or sounds. This meant that the pupils only had their physical selves to tell a story.  

Pupils had to learn how to draw objects. They then added an action and their own sounds to make it obvious what object they were creating. The boys had great fun with this and enjoyed both performing and guessing each others work.  

Then in groups pupils had to really be creative and imaginative as they created a scene based on household products. They had to think carefully about what noises they might need to support their performance and how they might mime out its action. Above you can see pupils creating the scene of going to the toilet and using a washing machine. Pupils also put their own spin on Goldilocks and the Three Bears. It was great to see so many pupils push themselves out of their comfort zones and take part in something new.

ASDAN Aboriginal-Style Art Designs

In Asdan two groups have been completing a challenge on Aboriginal style art, we have looked at traditional art symbols and the groups have used their math's knowledge to measure out their boomerang shape. They then used their art and design knowledge to create a design on paper once happy with the design the wooden boomerangs were decorated using acrylic art pens.

All students then learnt how to throw a boomerang.

 

 

Maths Fun in 3HI

 In tutor time after break all groups do literacy, numeracy and wellbeing.

Yesterday we finished our MyMaths very quickly (well done boys!) and played an online Maths game. It was lovely to see the boys doing some extra Maths work.
