Readathon - Week 5


Well done to 3LB for winning the readathon cup on Friday; they read for a fantastic 1 hour and 35 minutes!

Independent Research in PSHE

 


As a school we are always promoting independent learning.

It was fantastic to see year 9 pupils in a PSHE lesson using the TalktoFrank website to find answers to their questions and further information on drugs use. 

Pupils then shared their findings with the rest of the class.

Our VLE - Doddle results for terms 1 and 2

Excellent Results!!!
Doddle numbers for terms 1 and 2.

Well done to everybody for these excellent results for completing pieces of work on our virtual learning environment - Doddle.  4581 peices of work completed so far this year!

Some highlights from term two were:
  • we completed 1854 pieces of work (798 more than this time last year)
  • had eight pupils complete work over a weekend
  • 86% of pupils used the site.

St George's Day

During humanities this year we looked at the patron saints of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and how their flags make up the Union Jack. Today, April 23rd is St George's day.




This is the flag of St George and he is the patron saint of England, famous for slaying a dragon and rescuing a princess. But there are many interesting facts about St George and St George's day, did you know:


  • It is customary for people to wear our national flower, a red rose, in their button hole.
  • A red cross on a white background was St. George's emblem and was adopted by Richard the Lion Heart in the 12th century to avoid confusion in battle.
  • St. George was thought to be a Roman Solider who protested against the Romans' torture of Christians.
  • St. George was born in Turkey.
  • St. George has never been to England.
  • He was made patron saint of England in 1350 by Edward III.
  • He is also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal and Russia.





Readathon - Week 3/4

On Friday we saw the unveiling of the 'Readathon Champions' cup. Each week in  assembly the tutor group who have read for the longest period of time will be awarded with the cup. 

3GS were the first tutor group to win the cup; they read for a fantastic 3 hours and 18 minutes!

It was a close contest with 3HI just 8 minutes behind 3GS!

3rd - 4SK - 2 hours 20 minutes
4th - 3LB - 1 hour 54 minutes

Check out the new History of English Literature Timeline. You can locate this marvellous display outside Mrs. Saralis's classroom (Room 5). Feel free to investigate the richness and diversity of our literature from which our language has been woven.


Explore the evolution of English Literature from the previous centuries to the present day. 

The timeline includes a fascinating combination of iconic books such as The BFG, Animal Farm, Anne Frank's Diary and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night; the poets Imtiaz Dharker and Ted Hughes and one of today's most popular plays 'Blood Brothers'.

Remember to bring all your used batteries in today so we can see which tutor group has collected the most!

Don't worry if you have forgotten, you can still bring used batteries in to school for recycling as this will be an ongoing activity, ask our school eco champions for more information!
