Pixl Awards and Conference at Central Hall London

On Tuesday Mr Rooke and Miss Long took 3 of our recent year 11 leavers to London to receive their Pixl Edge awards. We drove up to London and then parked at Richmond before taking the train into  Westminster. We then made our way to Central Hall which was full of people for the Pixl Science conference.  The boys were presented with their awards on stage in front of everyone, and acknowledged for their achievements by ex England rugby player, Phil Vickery. Mr  Rooke then got   up on stage and did  a presentation about  Work Skills.
Ex staff member Mr Willis met us at Central Hall and after the awards we made our way on the underground to The Natural History Museum before our long journey home. Well done Shaye, Reece and Leon for yesterday,  we all had a lovely  day and we all wish you the best of luck in the future!

Creative Writing

Recently the whole school have had the opportunity to get in with creative writing. Pupils of all years either chose their own topic to write about or to write a story about an Earthquake. The results were outstanding, the imagination of the pupils is clear from the examples of work shown in this following post.

Make sure you give the stories a read! You will be impressed!

One pupil wrote a story containing targets to include a visual description of the character that is a famous author, but it starts to take over his life personally and professionally.  Chapter 1 engages us into the mind of the writer, and how she is feeling. ‘it’s taking over her life…’ ‘its getting TOO much..’ the fact that KS3 are able to refine the feelings of another character is a massive boost to knowing that they are aware of emotions.
Chapter 2 takes us through one day that she decided not to write but ends up receiving an unexpected call from a publishing agency stating that there are to be 5 new books… what happens next is for you to have a read and find out more. However don’t be shocked if there is a cliff-hanger!

Another Story written by a KS4 pupil, Alfie completed a story in after school club! Now that takes dedication and commitment to join an after school club that consists of long writing!! Something which our Pupils do tend to find a little intimidating at first. Furthermore with the guidance of the English department the pupils have all had a part in creating a story.
Alfie’s story is about a Hero Association and the day which is different from all the other days. With using the vocabulary given by teacher and one punctuation target, this story is filled with all sorts of adventure and mischief! Take a moment to read about the hero and a rampaging monster through the Z-city!

Year 9 pupil created a story about ‘The unexpected Earthquake’ with a beautiful start to the story with a rescue you wouldn’t expect so many of.Go on give it a read, I promise you I haven’t given away any spoilers for this one!

Thank you for giving these a read! Expect more wonderful and creative writing at The Polygon School!

The Boxing Blogspot.

Pupils at the polygon have been working hard to develop their boxing techniques. This weeks session included Mr T working the boys continuously on the pads. This workout is good for channeling aggression, as well as focusing attention to the control and techniques of the strikes.

Alfie slips and punches his way through a combination with Mr T.

Good example of discipline from Preston, as he listens eagerly to instructions from Mr T.

A week of work experience at Crest Nicholson

3 of the Polygon boys have been sent down to Crest Nicholson construction site on work experience week. They will learn and understand the basics of; carpentry, bricklaying, electrical, painting and decorating and plumbing. as well as this, they will get to build a bird box from scratch to take home with, they also get to walk onto the site in full gear and do a site walk to see how things are really done.

Fun at the fĂȘte

This past Friday students and staff helped to host the annual school fete at The Polygon, which was also open for parents and guardians to attend.

Each tutor group had their own individual stalls which included a cake sale, raffle/tombola and keepie-uppie competition, as well as activities kindly put on by The Saints Foundation.

In total £108.13 was raised!

A big shout out also to Mr Penfold who took one for the team...or more specifically one from the team...by volunteering to be pelted by wet sponges, thrown by gleeful fete goers, all in an effort to raise money for the school.

3KP visit to SWAC

3KP pupils had been offered an opportunity to go to Southampton Water Activities Centre as a part of their Outdoor Learning. Each week they engaged in a different activity.
They built a raft, tried paddle boarding and went sailing.
Some of them were horrified at first but showed great resilience and enjoyed taking part. They worked very well as a team, supporting and motivating each other.

'Men in Black: International' Reviewed

As part of one of our Stretch Program pupil’s media studies development, Cieran went to see and review ‘Men in Black: International’ in the cinema.

Cieran really enjoyed the film, especially the appearance of Frank the talking pug, who was his favourite character. He also particularly enjoyed the flying bike the Men in Black used. However, Cieran thought the film was a bit too long and was not as good as ‘The Secret Life of Pets 2’, which he saw recently.

Overall Cieran gave the film a thumbs up, rating it better than the 3rd Men in Black film, but not as good as the first two in the series.
