Martin Griffiths, 52, is a leader in a rapidly growing area
of medicine: patching up the victims of knife crime in London. He is a
consultant vascular/trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital and is
passionate about reducing violence in young people.
Martin visited the school in January and met with pupils in small groups or as individuals. He talked openly about his experiences of knife crime
and the work he is doing to educate young people about the dangers involved. Some of the more shocking facts included that 'over 50% of all people killed by a knife in the UK are killed with their own knife' and that 'there is no safe place to stab someone'. Martin explained that unfortunately he has seen people killed from knife wounds to their legs or arms as well as the more obvious damage inflicted when someone is stabbed in their upper body.
