Moris House - Science

Morris House - Science

Pupils from the engagement program at Morris House have been doing many experiments over the last term, these were:
Experiment 1  -Balloon Suction
The pupils were absolutely elated to see how a balloon with water was able to be vacuumed into such a tiny test tube. The first thing they had to think about was the amount of water to fill the balloon.
One pupil made an excellent comment at the end concluding that we had filled up the balloon too much. The next difficult challenge was to light the paper using a match stick. The problems were that they weren’t quick enough when placing the paper into the container provided. After so much resilience the whole class and staff worked together to evaluate what the problem was.
1.       The paper cut was too large
2.       Not placing the paper into the tube fast enough but with enough flame on the paper.
3.       After many goes the container became very smoky and left ash in some places meaning they had to wash the container out to continue with the trial.
4.       The smoke from previous trials needed to be cleaned out.
After many tests conducted, the pupils managed to see for themselves that the vacuum caused by the combustion of the oxygen was 'sucking' the balloon into the test tube.
Please find below the wondering evaluations written out by two pupils; the presentation on both are outstanding.

Experiment 2 - Super Spinners
Pupils carried out a test to see if they could make a super spinner! Please see again the evaluations below

Experiment 3 – Reaction Distance
This experiment was to see everyone reactions time when with hand open around a ruler and the other was to place with finger on the ruler. Conducting these experiment we were able to see the scores of reaction time and the amount of distance in centimetres.

Experiment 4 - Benham’s Disc
In this science lesson pupils looked at the study of Benham’s Disc. A disc that is black and white and when spun around with a pointer, people can see colours or nothing. The experiment was useful to discuss light, sight and perception of any age.
The results from each person was a mixed result:
Pupil 1 – Red, Blue, Green
Pupil 2 – Black and White
Pupil 3 – Black and white
Staff 1 – Yellow
Staff 2 – Black and White
Staff 3 – Blue

The pupils were surprised at the results and discussed in class about how everyone does not exactly seethe world in the same colours. The discussion ended in talking about colour blindness and how this can have an impact in careers.
