Work Skills at The Polygon

Work skills is a key element to Key stage 4 at The Polygon. The development in learning the skills to be able to progress after school is vital for the pupils to identify that there are many options.

Anyone can achieve highly when they put their mind to it and to have the patience to build and to organise what will be their next steps. To be able to identify the logistics and differences between the options will help the young person to choose what is the best pathway plan for them.

Every week in September the two classes have been focusing on the advantages and differences between taking on an apprenticeship or going to college, depending on the strengths and attributes the young person has. They then looked at what they would like to do and the route they would need to take to ensure they could fulfil the elements to achieve this particular pathway.

Developments in finding out what their strengths are meant they were then able to list a few ideas from an official generated career wheel, along with their own interests to compare. To their surprise, finding out that their skill set could go in to other avenues rather than just what they expected.

In doing these studies and research, the pupils are able to access and move forward to a pathway beyond the school environment. To then get ready to move on to working or further education.

Whichever the path they choose to take , The Polygon provides a very supportive system from the Work Skills teacher, Mr Rooke who liaises with outside career development and institutes to ensure all options and opportunities are provided to the pupils.

We will ensure that pupils are all given the same opportunities as any other child in the city. Also setting up work experience to give pupils a taster into the real world and what to expect.

The next steps will be to produce a CV, along with college applications, these are absolutely vital to ensure pupils are ready to take on the next steps in life.

The school also contact alumni to find out how they are progressing over the years. The school is very interested to find out how past pupils are progressing and will provide advise to pupils and parents if they wish after they have left
