Year 8 have been learning about the concept of Stewardship in RE. Stewardship is the religious idea that people have been given a special responsibility to be in charge of the Earth, to protect and care for it.
Most religions believe that Earth belongs to God, people have a duty as stewards to look after it on God’s behalf. In return, we are able to use what the Earth provides for our own survival. People do not have a right to abuse the natural world. Those who believe in reincarnation believe they will return to Earth after death so will want to ensure they have a good Earth to return to.
Christians believe polluting the planet is not good ‘stewardship’ as Gods creation is being abused. Pollution harms people and animals so is against all Buddhist teachings. Buddhists believe no harm should come to any living being.
Religious or not we can all do our bit and take a little extra care to make sure litter won’t hurt our animal friends in our community!
As part of our RE, Eco Schools, Citizenship and Healthy High Five curriculum year 8 got to experience awe and wonder in our local area and help the environment by taking part in acts of stewardship. Pupils were shocked at the rubbish that was dumped in Lordswood woods it was very disappointing to see fly tipping but we did our best to clean up the woods and enjoyed our beautiful Winter walk!
Well done year 8!
