Moris House - Science

Morris House - Science

Pupils from the engagement program at Morris House have been doing many experiments over the last term, these were:
Experiment 1  -Balloon Suction
The pupils were absolutely elated to see how a balloon with water was able to be vacuumed into such a tiny test tube. The first thing they had to think about was the amount of water to fill the balloon.
One pupil made an excellent comment at the end concluding that we had filled up the balloon too much. The next difficult challenge was to light the paper using a match stick. The problems were that they weren’t quick enough when placing the paper into the container provided. After so much resilience the whole class and staff worked together to evaluate what the problem was.
1.       The paper cut was too large
2.       Not placing the paper into the tube fast enough but with enough flame on the paper.
3.       After many goes the container became very smoky and left ash in some places meaning they had to wash the container out to continue with the trial.
4.       The smoke from previous trials needed to be cleaned out.
After many tests conducted, the pupils managed to see for themselves that the vacuum caused by the combustion of the oxygen was 'sucking' the balloon into the test tube.
Please find below the wondering evaluations written out by two pupils; the presentation on both are outstanding.

Experiment 2 - Super Spinners
Pupils carried out a test to see if they could make a super spinner! Please see again the evaluations below

Experiment 3 – Reaction Distance
This experiment was to see everyone reactions time when with hand open around a ruler and the other was to place with finger on the ruler. Conducting these experiment we were able to see the scores of reaction time and the amount of distance in centimetres.

Experiment 4 - Benham’s Disc
In this science lesson pupils looked at the study of Benham’s Disc. A disc that is black and white and when spun around with a pointer, people can see colours or nothing. The experiment was useful to discuss light, sight and perception of any age.
The results from each person was a mixed result:
Pupil 1 – Red, Blue, Green
Pupil 2 – Black and White
Pupil 3 – Black and white
Staff 1 – Yellow
Staff 2 – Black and White
Staff 3 – Blue

The pupils were surprised at the results and discussed in class about how everyone does not exactly seethe world in the same colours. The discussion ended in talking about colour blindness and how this can have an impact in careers.

Character Education

Character Education

This year we have introduced a new curriculum subject called Character Education. Pupils in KS4 have started a course via PiXL Build Up and iAchieve on Equality and Diversity.

So far we have looked and the definitions of Equality and Diversity, The Equality Act and the Protected Characteristics.

The pupils work on an online learning platform which they have engaged well with and we look forward to seeing their progress as the year goes on.

Bag2School Collection

Thanks to everyone who brought items into school for our latest Bag2School collection.

We collected 43 kg, an improvement on our previous collection of 36 kg but still short of our best effort in recent times of 80 kg.

The clothes collected from our school are baled into big ‘botany bales’ and then loaded onto trucks for export. Once they arrive at the customer’s factory, they are sorted into 150 different types of clothing depending upon the end market.

The clothing will make journeys all over the world starting their new life! This can be a purpose built second hand store in Eastern Europe or South America, or a market stall in East or West Africa, providing valuable employment for importers, warehouse staff, transport companies and stall holders as well as affordable clothes for local people.

Our next collection will be February 12th, so keep collecting and bring your items into school anytime as we can store them until the collection. A quick reminder of what we can collect:

  • Men’s, Ladies’ and Children’s clothing
  • Paired shoes (tied together or elastic band around)
  • Handbags
  • Hats
  • Bags
  • Scarves and ties
  • Jewellery
  • Lingerie
  • Socks
  • Belts
  • Soft toys
  • Household linen
  • Household curtains
  • Household towels
  • Household bedding (bed sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers)

PSHE Year 8 First Aid

This term Year 8 have been learning all the knowledge, skills, strategies and personal attributes associated with quality First Aid.

We have gained knowledge of:
 * How to make a clear and efficient call to emergency services if necessary
* Concepts of basic first-aid, for example dealing with common injuries, including head injuries
* Lifesaving skills, including how to administer CPR
* The purpose of defibrillators and when one might be needed

During a visit and training from St Johns Ambulance our school was commended on its introduction of  defibrillators to the curriculum as this is part of the new 2020 PSHE curriculum and our school was the first school they had visited to embed this.

Pupils have learnt rehearsal strategies through lots of role play, communication skills, ability to apply knowledge and how to assess risk to keep themselves and others safe. Personal attributes of assertiveness and confidence have been discussed and developed through this unit of study.

Mrs Foster and Miss Potts are very proud of the boys in Year 8 and the learning that has taken place. A big shout out goes to Tyler who has not only had 100% attendance during these lessons but is always the first to try something new, ask a question, answer a question and support his peers. An excellent attitude to learning in PSHE well done!

Head boy Elections

We are proud of our tradition of voting for Head boy and Deputy Head boy at The Polygon and this year was no exception. All of our year 11 boy's photos and names were added to the ballot paper for everyone in our school community to vote for. We had a very busy polling station where pupils and staff waited patiently for an available voting booth.

Results were counted by a member of staff and two year 10 pupils to check no mistakes were made. During Friday's assembly it was announced that Alfie and Lewis were elected Head boy and Deputy both pupils were very proud to received their badges. Well done!

School Council

School council have already met and reviewed their impact and successes from 2018-2019 see below.

* Most proud of their organisation of Pride Day
* Influence over football goals being replaced
* Green flag renewed
* Yoga club introduced after school
* Representing the school to visitors ie School in Bloom
* Feedback to teachers about bullying and time keeping
* Pupil voice voting for head boy and democracy in school
* Make your Mark National vote
* Being part of a pupil panel for new staff

Our new school council representatives have also been chosen by each Tutor group and have also had their first meeting to understand their role and voice the opinions of their Tutor group. Mrs Ash will keep everyone reading the blog updated on their progress as the year continues while Mrs Foster is on maternity leave.

Citizenship Lessons

During Citizenship lessons tutor groups have all taken part in 'Make your Mark' and returned our results to Hayden Collins Participation Officer for Children and Young People in Southampton. We look forward to hearing how our results compare to other Southampton schools and the rest of the country.

Like most of the country we are all very confused by the current political situation concerning Brexit and now the General Election so this has had quality time given to it within our Citizenship planning this half term. KS3 will be learning about the process of a general election and how this affects them and KS4 will be undertaking a research project into the UK's relationship with Europe and learning to express, justify and defend a personal opinion about this current political issue.

We will also cover:

*  Fire safety and the impact of arson on the community
* Armistice Day
* Anti bullying week
* Diversity
* Enterprise charity week for gender and educational rights

PiXL

As part of the PiXL Challenge, which our school  incorporate using the 5 descriptors of Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative and Communication, 3MB had some varied takes on it this term which was used to good effect.

Preston showed off his leadership, organisation, initiative and communication skills in arranging and refereeing a year 7 5 aside football match which was great to see.  The Year 7's loved participating and Preston really enjoyed the whole process from beginning to end.

Meanwhile the rest of 3MB, Roch, Marley, Rio and Tyler decided to film sequence shots on a story they came up with, and particularly enjoyed the creative side of ideas, before setting off into sorting out the props and then finally delivering the action sequences.
