Recipe Boxes from Axtons/Wave 105

The Polygon School has been lucky enough to arrange funding from Wave 105 so that Axtons fruit and vegetable company could put together 42 recipe boxes for our pupils.

These boxes came with a recipe and all the ingredients to prepare the meal at home-we have had some lovely photos of our pupils cooking with their families!

Tyler made a delicious looking macaroni cheese!

As did Preston and Nan (I will include the recipe at the end of the blog!)
Tash and Mum made a fantastic shepherds pie (looks lovely and cheesy!)

This is one of the boxes that was delivered-looks great!

We are so pleased that families enjoyed receiving their boxes  and making their recipes! A big thanks to those who also sent photos in-we loved seeing these!

Below is the recipe for macaroni cheese that was used:

Macaroni cheese

Ingredients:
100g pasta
100g Cheddar cheese
 25g butter or soft spread
 25g plain flour
 250ml semi-skimmed milk
 Black pepper
Equipment:
Two saucepans, weighing scales, grater, chopping board, knife, colander, measuring jug, wooden spoon, whisk, ovenproof dish (or foil tray).
Method:
1.     Bring a saucepan of water to the boil, and then add the pasta. Cook for about 10 – 12 minutes.
2.     Grate the cheese.
3.     While the pasta is cooking, make the sauce:
·       place the fat, flour and milk into a small saucepan;
·       bring the sauce to a simmer, whisking all the time until it has thickened;
·       stir in 75g of the grated cheese.
4.     Preheat the grill.
5.     Drain the boiling hot water away from the macaroni into a colander in the sink.
6.     Stir the drained macaroni into the cheese sauce and add a few twists of black pepper.
7.     Pour the macaroni into an oven-proof dish (or foil tray).
8.     Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
9.     Place under a hot grill until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown.

A big thank you gain to all who were involved with organising funding and delivery of these recipe boxes.

Lunch Times at The Polygon School during Covid-19

Since all schools have had to move to new opening measures since the COVID-19 outbreak we have put plans in place to ensure that all requirements are met to the best standards under the WHO and government guidance.

As a school we have all come together to make posters, engaged in further training and plans for the transition of gradually re-opening during the pandemic.

These poster are all been set in classrooms and have set a maximum occupancy, depending on how big the room is.

The school caretaker has marked the hall floor with appropriate 2M table distancing. This is to make sure that all tables and chairs are spaced correctly and pupils and staff maintain the social distance rules.

Here are a few photos of our great efforts to reduce the spread of vivid-19.

We’ve also been blessed with such great weather that we have been able to utilise our outdoor space. We have sat on the picnic tables and grass areas for lunches. And on the last day of the half term we had a lovely BBQ (Social distancing maintained throughout)

As you can see the pupils and staff at The Polygon have taken this all very seriously but still have a positive time at school despite the difficulties this virus has brought. We are all working together to ensure we remain safe during the uncertain time

Shedding Some Light in the Allotment

There's been some shady goings on in the allotment.  Mrs Ash and Mrs Newman have been busily cutting back some bushes to allow the fruit plants more light.

The nettle bushes are a good source of nitrogen so will go into the compost.

Hopefully, it won't be long until we see the fruits of their labour!

Learning at Engagement Centre Morris House

Over the past few months the boys at Morris House have been busy taking part in Forest School at Itchen valley Country Park with Youth Options where they have learnt fire building skills and become quite the pros. The boys have enjoyed toasting marshmallows over campfires and cooking sausages as well as making their own bow and arrows along with much more.

The Pupils at Morris House have also taken part in visiting Art Galleries and Museums around the local area these included the Tudor House Museum, Sea City Museum, Southampton Art Gallery and the John Hansford Gallery. The boys really enjoyed these trips and learning some history about Southampton. The Mirza Haroum expedition was a hit with all the boys, they enjoyed the immersive experience so much that one pupil took back with him what he learnt and created a cylinder in his art lesson to feel like you were having an experience inside a forest.

Just before school partially-closed the boys at Morris house started their NIBAS climbing award at Boulder Shack where they will learn key climbing skills and gain a qualification. We look forward to returning there to complete their award soon.

Exploring Happiness with Laughology

Yesterday I did some on line training to learn how to help support the pupils emotionally when they return to school.
I learned that laughter is a really good tonic to help all people.
I will be asking the boys “what happiness means for them” to see if we can include some ideas in to the school day.
However, “happiness is a day under my duvet” will not be actioned!
We will work together on making sure that “Wonky thoughts” are worked through.
The school places a great emphasis on emotional health and well being.
Any ideas you have which might helped can be emailed to
