KS3 - RE - Truth

In RE we are learning to discuss the concept of truth.
What does the truth mean to you?

KS3 pupils were reading news papers stories and discussing which stories we believed and which may have stretched the truth.
All pupils decided being honest and telling the truth is really important.
We will be researching creation stories and evaluating how we believe the world began while being respectful to different religions.

Wembley

Wembley

On Sunday 25th November, 10 students, along with 5 members of staff, travelled to Wembley Stadium in London to watch a football tournament. The school had been donated tickets from a local energy company to attend The Wembley Cup, a tournament featuring four YouTube football teams including football legends.

The group met at Morris House at 10:45am, ready to leave by mini-coach at 11am. After many an arduous game of ‘I Spy’, we arrived in London and walked towards the looming arches of Wembley. Some of our students had never been out of Southampton before, let alone to London or to the biggest stadium in the UK with a capacity of 90,000.

Despite the chilly weather, we enjoyed 2 semi-final games and watched F2 lift the trophy after winning the final game against Rebel FC.

The boys had a fantastic time, which was reflected by their impeccable behaviour. I am sure they will hold on to these memories for a long time.

War on Plastic

3KP's War on Plastic

During Citizenship, the boys were introduced to a current global issue, the 'War on Plastic'. They already knew a lot about this subject, and didn't hold back when giving their opinion! They discussed the use of plastic and its impact on our environment, and thought about how we could reduce the amount we use and throw away.

They were so interested in this topic that they wanted to investigate it further as a PiXL Edge activity. They carried out research on the internet and some came up with questions for a survey to ask members of the public.

Over the last couple of weeks, the boys have enjoyed two outings to reinforce the work done in the classroom. Our first was litter-picking on the beach, which among the things we found, were plastic twine, polystyrene, plastic bottles and bags. They have brought this rubbish back to school and will be using it to create a sculpture in Art!

This week, we visited Alton MRF to learn how our dry-mixed recyclables are separated. We were shocked to see the sheer volume of materials this facility recycled (it can handle up to 150,000 tonnes of recyclables a year) and to learn where the recycling was then shipped to, including China and Germany.

Knife Crime specialist visit

Martin Griffiths, 52, is a leader in a rapidly growing area of medicine: patching up the victims of knife crime in London. He is a consultant vascular/trauma surgeon at the Royal London Hospital and is passionate about reducing violence in young people.

Martin visited the school in January and met with pupils in small groups or as individuals. He talked openly about his experiences of knife crime
and the work he is doing to educate young people about the dangers involved.

Some of the more shocking facts included that 'over 50% of all people killed by a knife in the UK are killed with their own knife' and that 'there is no safe place to stab someone'. Martin explained that unfortunately he has seen people killed from knife wounds to their legs or arms as well as the more obvious damage inflicted when someone is stabbed in their upper body.

Our first bloom this year

Flowers, in January!

Already around the school site you can see daffodils and narcissus appearing. They add a lovely splash of colour and make a great start to this year’s Polygon in Bloom.
